A cave full of piled up black bears wake up hungry
and search out maple buds
now blown out into blooms
still edible.
Is that enough?
Not nearly.
They'll eat whatever comes
including newly thawed out winter kill .
Possibly they'll dream of protein
in the form of
a herd of spawning river herring
in newly liberated waters
after the latest dam gets blown.

9.5 local megawatts go extinct
as another pipeline opens for business.

Mesmerized by the millions of fish going upriver to spawn,
this is where I take my stand .
There are no crystal balls or pristine solutions.
The future is to be deliberated,
carefully.
I think there will always be birdseed
and donuts for bears,
until the humans need to move away
in search of food.
